Paper points in endodontics do the step before the filling: drying the canal so the sealer contacts dentine rather than fluid. They are sold in the same ISO sizes and tapers as the gutta percha so a point reaches working length without binding short, and box counts differ by size, commonly 100 or 200 per box. How to choose
- Taper: match the gutta percha and paper point taper to the file system you shape with, .02 for hand instrumentation, .04 or .06 for most rotary systems.
- ISO size: stock the sizes you finish apical preparations at, plus accessory points if you use lateral condensation.
- Technique: single cone and continuous wave need greater-taper master points; lateral condensation needs a master point plus fine accessory points and spreaders.
- Drying: paper points in the matching size and taper, in box counts that suit your case volume.

Frequently asked questions
How do I pick the right gutta percha point size?
Match the point to your final apical file, in both ISO size and taper. After shaping, fit the master cone to working length and confirm tug-back and radiographic fit before cementing. A point that binds short or slides past length means the size or taper is wrong for the preparation.
Why use paper points rather than air-drying?
Air drying does not remove fluid from the apical few millimetres, and residual moisture keeps the sealer from wetting dentine. Paper points wick fluid out at length and show whether fluid is still entering from beyond the apex. The paper points endodontics practices use most are the sizes matching their final apical file.
What taper should I order, .02, .04 or .06?
Order the taper your shaping system produces. Hand instrumentation with K-files generally gives a .02 taper, while most rotary systems finish at .04 or .06. Using a taper that does not match the preparation leaves either a gap coronally or a point that will not reach length.
